The Westville Neighbourhood Watch (WNW) has reported a significant increase in residential break-ins across the suburb over the past two months, prompting an urgent call for enhanced police visibility and intervention. Residents are expressing growing concern over the escalating crime rate, which appears to be targeting homes during both daytime and evening hours. According to Mr. Sipho Dlamini, Chairperson of the Westville Neighbourhood Watch, the reported incidents have shown a disturbing trend. "We have seen a 40% increase in reported residential burglaries and attempted break-ins since the beginning of May," stated Mr. Dlamini. "This is a serious concern for our community. While the WNW is doing its utmost to patrol and monitor, our resources are limited, and we cannot replace the vital role of a consistent police presence." He added that several cases involved forced entry, with electronics and jewellery being the primary targets. The WNW has formally communicated its concerns to the Westville South African Police Service (SAPS) station, requesting a strategic deployment of additional patrols, particularly in areas identified as high-risk. Mrs. Emily van der Merwe, a long-time Westville resident whose home was recently burgled, shared her distress. "It's a terrifying experience to know your home has been violated. We used to feel safe here, but now there's a constant underlying anxiety. We need to see more police vehicles on our streets; it acts as a deterrent." In response to the community's concerns, Captain Zola Ndlovu, spokesperson for the Westville SAPS, acknowledged the reports. "We are aware of the recent increase in property-related crimes and are actively investigating these incidents," Captain Ndlovu stated. "The SAPS is committed to ensuring the safety of all Westville residents. We encourage the community to continue reporting all suspicious activities and to collaborate with us by sharing information that could assist in our investigations and lead to arrests." The Westville Neighbourhood Watch is urging all residents to remain vigilant, secure their properties, and report any suspicious individuals or vehicles to both the WNW and the SAPS immediately. Collaboration between community structures and law enforcement remains crucial in addressing the current crime challenges facing Westville.
